Dinesh has bilateral hearing loss (auditory neuropathy), which became apparent when he was 13. Due to the difficulty of accessing hearing aids, he faced difficulties in his studies and finding a job. Dinesh belongs to an ethnic indigenous group of the Terai in southern Nepal. He came into contact with SHRUTI in 2017, and joined the organization as an executive board member.
Learning of his interest in photography and videography as a possible route to job opportunities, SHRUTI found Dinesh a training opportunity, consulting with the providers to inform them about hard-of-hearing people’s learning needs. He successfully completed 2 months’ training and started working for a TV channel as a camera operator’s assistant. Through his dedication and hard work Dinesh became a camera operator in his own right.
He also continued his studies and completed an MA in mass communication, as well as securing accreditation as a journalist. Ambitious and hardworking, Dinesh does not feel held back: now he is shooting and editing video for a renowned media house. He records videos and interviews with many influential personalities.
Dinesh is happy to be independent and confident in his profession. There was a time when he worried he would never get a job because of his hearing loss – and, even if he did, that it would be very difficult due to the communication gap. But today Dinesh says his colleagues are very supportive: everyone appreciates his work, and helps him if there is any difficulty in communication.
“I would like to thank SHRUTI for providing me with the opportunity for training in Photography and Videography. Today I am very happy to be independent and work where my passion and interest lie.”
